2 Timothy 2:24-26 with notes

2 Timothy 2:24-26 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Macarthur study Notes: able to teach. This is one word in Gr. meaning "skilled in teaching." those who are in opposition. Primarily unbelievers (captive to Satan, v. 26), but also could include believers deceived by the foolish and ignorant" (v. 23) speculations of the false teachers; and possibly, the false teachers themselves. God may grant them repentance. Cf. Acts 11:18; see 2 Corinthians 7:9,10. All true repentance is produced by God's sovereign grace (Ephesians 2:7), and without such grace human effort to change is futile (cf. Jeremiah 13:23). knowledge of the truth. When God, by grace, grants saving faith it includes the granting of repentance from sin. Neither is a human work. the snare of the devil. Deception is Satan's trap. He is an inveterate, scheming, clever, and subtle purveyor of lies.

Esv study Bible Notes: Servant is the common word for “slave” or “bondservant” (Gk. doulos), but Paul uses it also to refer to those who preach the gospel, e.g., himself (Rom. 1:1; Gal. 1:10; Titus 1:1) and Epaphras (Col. 4:12). This section (2 Tim. 2:24–26) is a key passage concerning a pastor's handling of troublesome people in the church. Most interpreters see these opponents as unbelievers who do not have a knowledge of the truth (i.e., salvation; cf. note on 1 Tim. 2:4). Paul emphasizes the importance of not dealing with such “quarrelsome” people in a “quarrelsome” manner (2 Tim. 2:24) but rather correcting the opponents in a spirit of gentleness (2 Cor. 10:1; Gal. 6:1; Eph. 4:2; 1 Pet. 3:15; cf. come to their senses. Rom. 1:21; 1:22), salvation brings the ability to begin to see reality. Paul's regular reference to the false teachers' lack of knowledge and understanding (e.g., 2 Tim. 2:16, 23; 3:8) points to the fact that they fail to grasp what is really true. the snare of the devil. Paul often describes humanity as enslaved by the devil and in need of rescue (see 2 Cor. 4:4).

memory verse with notes 2 Corinthians 5:21

2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Notes: The fifteen words in the original Greek in this verse express the doctrine of substitution like no other single verse in the Bible. God made the only person who knew no sin, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be sin for us. Some mistakenly think this means that Jesus became a sinner—that, on the cross, He actually was punished because He was a sinner. The truth is that, on the cross, Jesus was as holy as He ever was in the eternity before or the eternity after. On the cross God treated Jesus as if He had personally committed every sin ever committed by every person who would ever believe, though, in fact, He committed none of them. God put the punishment for our sins on the sinless Son.

The rest of the verse says that "we might become the righteousness of God in Him." That's the other side of substitution. God treated Jesus as a sinner so that He could treat us as if we were righteous. He was not a sinner, and we're not righteous. That's the substitution. He fulfilled all righteousness so that His sinless life could be credited to your account. Pretty amazing, isn't it? On the cross, God treats Jesus as if He lived your life. That is the heart of the gospel.

Macarthur study Notes: Here Paul summarized the heart of the gospel, resolving the mystery and paradox of vv. 18-20, and explaining how sinners can be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. These 15 Gr. words express the doctrines of imputation and substitution like no other single verse. who knew no sin. Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God (cf. Luke 23:4, 14, 22, 47; John 8:46; Hebrews 4:15; 7:26; 1 Peter 1:19; 2:22-24; 3:18; Revelation 5:2-10). sin on our behalf. God the Father, using the principle of imputation, treated Christ as if He were a sinner though He was not, and had Him die as a subtitute to pay the penalty for the sins of those who believe in Him (cf. Isaiah 53:4-6; Galatians 3:10-13; 1 Peter 2:24). On the cross He did not become a sinner (as some suggest), but remained as holy as ever. He was treated as if He were guilty of all sins ever committed by all who would ever believe, though He committed none. The wrath of God was exhausted on Him and the just requirement of God's law met for those for whom He died. the righteousness of God. Another reference to justification and imputation. The righteousness that is credited to believer's account is the righteousness of Jesus Christ, God's Son. As Christ was not a sinner, but was treated as if He were, so believers who have not yet been made righteous (until glorification) are treated as if they were righteous. He bore their sins so that they could bear His righteousness. God treated Him as if He committed believers' sins, and treats believers as if they did only the righteous deeds of the sinless Son of God.

Esv study Bible Notes: This verse is one of the most important in all of Scripture for understanding the meaning of the atonement and justification. Here we see that the one who knew no sin is Jesus Christ (v. 20) and that he (God) made him (Christ) to be sin Gk. hamartia, “sin”). This means that God the Father made Christ to be regarded and treated as “sin” even though Christ himself never sinned (Heb. 4:15; cf. Gal. 3:13). Further, we see that God did this for our sake—that is, God regarded and treated “our” sin (the sin of all who would believe in Christ) as if our sin belonged not to us but to Christ himself. Thus Christ “died for all” (2 Cor. 5:14) and, as Peter wrote, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree” (1 Pet. 2:24). In becoming sin “for our sake,” Christ became our substitute—that is, Christ took our sin upon himself and, as our substitute, thereby bore the wrath of God (the punishment that we deserve) in our place (“for our sake”). Thus the technical term for this foundational doctrine of the Christian faith is the substitutionary atonement—that Christ has provided the atoning sacrifice as “our” substitute, for the sins of all who believe (cf. Rom. 3:23–25). The background for this is Isaiah 53 from the Greek (Septuagint) translation of the Hebrew OT, which includes the most lengthy and detailed OT prophecy of Christ's death and which contains numerous parallels to 2 Cor. 5:21. Isaiah's prophecy specifically uses the Greek word for “sin” (Gk. hamartia) five times (as indicated below in italics) with reference to the coming Savior (the suffering servant) in just a few verses—e.g., “surely he has born our griefs” (Isa. 53:4); “He was crushed for our iniquities” (Isa. 53:5); “the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isa. 53:6); “he shall bear their iniquities” (Isa. 53:11); “he bore the sin of many” (Isa. 53:12). In a precise fulfillment of this prophecy, Christ became “sin” for those who believe in him, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. This means that just as God imputed our sin and guilt to Christ (“he made him to be sin”) so God also imputes the righteousness of Christ—a righteousness that is not our own—to all who believe in Christ. Because Christ bore the sins of those who believe, God regards and treats believers as having the legal status of “righteousness” (Gk. dikaiosynÄ“). This righteousness belongs to believers because they are “in him,” that is, “in Christ” (e.g., Rom. 3:22; 5:18; 1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Cor. 5:17, 19; Phil. 3:9). Therefore “the righteousness of God” (which is imputed to believers) is also the righteousness of Christ—that is, the righteousness and the legal status that belongs to Christ as a result of Christ having lived as one who “knew no sin.” This then is the heart of the doctrine of justification: God regards (or counts) believers as forgiven and God declares and treats them as forgiven, because God the Father has imputed the believer's sin to Christ and because God the Father likewise imputes Christ's righteousness to the believer. (See further notes on Rom. 4:6–8; 5:18; 10:3; 10:6–8; see also Isa. 53:11: “the righteous one, my servant, [shall] make many to be accounted righteous”).

I want to make a quick pointer for those who struggle with Scripture memory and you fail to memorize the verse.

The point is simple, walk as you memorize! What walk as I memorize, yes it is true it has helped my memory a lot. Scriptures are now stuck in my head. Do this and you will not regret it. If you need some verses to memorize email me @ miketryban@hotmail.com. Good luck and I hope you have fun with Scripture memory.
Now you might not get on the first day of the verse you are trying to memorize, but don't let that bother you, after a few days you will be able to qoute without looking at it. Q: Oh you have a Question how many verses do I memorize that's up to you I can memorize 12 verses in less than 20 minutes, you choose how many you want to memorize. Q: Another Question what do I do after I have memorized the verse then put it under review. Let me explain get something to hold the verses in, then get something to devide the verses for, like daily, weekly, and monthly, after you feel have memorized the verse put it under weekly, after you can qoute on any given time put it under monthly 1-31. Go to this link to learn more http://chipperfisher.blogspot.com/2008/12/where-to-begin-when-youre-new-christian_12.html enjoy.

Things to pray about & praise God for.

I thank God for His plan for my life. I Seek wisdom and grace to live accordingly.

I reaffirm my trust in God's sovereign work in my life.

If I tend to get discouraged or complain when troubles come, I ask God to forgive me and help me see troubles from His perspective. I acknowledge before Him that He is in control of everything.

I ask God for the discernment to recognize Satanic deceptions, and the wisdom to pursue truth. I pray for God's enabling as I discipline myself for diligent Bible study.

I ask God to keep me spiritually alert throughout this day so the enemy doesn't catch me off guard.

I thank God for choosing me to be His child and for drawing me to Himself in saving faith. I Praise Him for His promise never to let me go.

I ask God to soften the hearts of people I know who understand the facts of the gospel, but haven't yet made a commitment to it.

I ask God to give me wisdom regarding when to warn the people I am witnessing to.

I ask the Lord to help me act like His child.

I ask God to help me be a witness for whose testimony shines brightly for Christ.

May the Holy Spirit so fill my heart with the consciousness of the love of Christ my Lord, that there may be no room in my life for anything inconsistent with His love. AMEN.

O God, some of us shrink from our life-work, from those with whom we have to associate, from unwelcome toil and irksome tasks. Enable us to see Thy plan, and to trust Thee who art working out Thy plan in our lives. May the love of Christ constrain us no longer to live unto ourselves, but to Him. AMEN.

We thank Thee, O Saviour, that Thou hast taught us to know Thee, and to love Thee; but we thank Thee most of all for adopting us into Thy family, and making us the sons and daughters of the Lord God Almighty. May we walk as children of Light, and go through the world fulfilling the ministries of Heaven. AMEN.

O Christ, Who didst sit at Jacob's well, give me to drink of the water of life, and to hear Thy voice, which is as music; let that spring, of which Thou did speak to the woman, rise up within my heart unto eternal life. AMEN.

O Saviour of men! I am nothing better than common earthenware; but may I be cleansed and purified, and then filled with Thy heavenly treasure. Dip me deep intothe water of life, and give refreshment through me to many parched and weary hearts. AMEN.

Tell us, O Lord, where Thou art leading Thy flock to-day, that we may follow upon Thy track. We do not ask Thee to come our way, but to teach us Thine. AMEN.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want. May Thy grace abound towards me, so that having all sufficiency in all things, I may abound unto every good work. AMEN.

Grant unto me grace, O Lord, that I may both perceive and know what things I ought to do, and may also have grace and power faithfully to fulfil the same. AMEN.

Be not far from me, O Lord, this day; and through all its hours may I be found doing those things which are well-pleasing in Thy sight. AMEN.

Thou knowest, Lord, how often I am sorely let and hindered in running the race which is set before me. May Thy bountiful grace and mercy come to my help, that I may finish my course with joy, and receive the crown of life. AMEN.

Enable me to do not only what I like to do, but what I ought.
